Hester Bass is an American author and children’s book writer with a varied and accomplished background. Born and raised in rural Georgia, near Atlanta, she was shaped early by a love of books, language, and nature, inspired by her mother and father. Her childhood experiences included writing her first story about a green-eyed cat and engaging with the natural world by raising tadpoles on the porch. She developed a passion for storytelling that would later form the foundation of her professional life.

Her educational path led her to Boston, where she earned a B.A. in Communications from Simmons College. Following graduation, she worked in radio and television advertising as a writer and voiceover talent, and she was also the lead singer of a Boston rock band called Flight 19. Bass later moved to New York to study acting at the HB Studio, focusing on Shakespeare. During this time, she worked delivering singing telegrams to notable figures such as Andy Warhol and Barbara Walters and appeared on television game shows including “$50,000 Pyramid” with Dick Clark and “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” with Meredith Vieira.

Bass has traveled extensively, both for personal enrichment and professional engagements. She has visited 43 U.S. states and 13 foreign countries to give presentations at schools, libraries, festivals, and conferences, sharing her experiences and encouraging audiences to pursue their goals. Her teaching experience includes instructing young children in creative activities such as knitting and drawing. These travels and professional experiences informed her writing, allowing her to craft stories that reflect a rich understanding of culture, history, and the arts.

Her literary career includes the publication of several children’s books, notable among them “So Many Houses” and “The Secret World of Walter Anderson,” a picture-book biography that received the NCTE Orbis Pictus Award for Outstanding Nonfiction for Children. Another work, “Seeds of Freedom: The Peaceful Integration of Huntsville, Alabama,” was recognized with the NCSS Carter G. Woodson Book Award Elementary Honor. Bass’ books are informed by her appreciation for art, history, and social issues, and she continues to create works that educate and inspire young readers.

Hester Bass currently resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with her husband, Clayton Bass, an artist originally from North Carolina.
