Jeff Bienstock Jeopardy Contestant Profile
Jeff Bienstock is a musical theatre writer and composer based in Brooklyn, New York, with a career rooted in original stage productions and collaborative musical development. Born in Santa Monica, California, he studied music at Occidental College before moving to New York to attend NYU Steinhardt, where he earned a Master’s degree in Musical Theatre Composition. While still a student, he wrote his first full-length musical, The Morning After / The Night Before, which premiered at the New York Fringe Festival in 2010. The production achieved a sold-out run at the Lucille Lortel Theatre and received a Best-of-Fest Award for Outstanding Music and Lyrics, marking an early breakthrough in his career.
Bienstock continued to build his profile through collaborations and industry programs. In 2011, alongside Eric March and Patrick Link, he received a Sloan Foundation Grant to develop The Bone Wars, which premiered at Ensemble Studio Theatre in 2012. That same year, he was selected for the Johnny Mercer Songwriters Project at Northwestern University, where he was mentored by established Broadway figures Craig Carnelia and Andrew Lippa. During this period, he also met songwriter Andrea Daly, who would become a key collaborator. Their work together includes Legendale, an original musical comedy exploring themes of life, relationships, and video games. The project was developed through readings, workshops, and residencies, including time at Goodspeed Musicals, before being featured at the National Alliance of Musical Theatre Festival in 2015 and the ASCAP Workshop led by Stephen Schwartz. Legendale premiered internationally in Denmark in 2017 at Fredericia Teater, followed by its American premiere at the Human Race Theatre in Dayton, Ohio.
His body of work also includes Dorks, Drunks, Dinosaurs: The Songs of Jeff Bienstock, a showcase presented at the Laurie Beechman Theatre in 2013, highlighting his songwriting range. In 2018, he began collaborating with mentor Joseph Church on a parody project centered on Broadway jukebox bio-musicals. After delays during the global pandemic, this evolved into Who Is Jimmy Pants?, which premiered Off-Broadway at the York Theatre in March 2025 under the direction of Stephen Nachamie, with music direction by Benjamin Weiss. The production featured performers Steven Booth, Kirsten Scott, and Tony nominee David Garrison. Bienstock is also an alumnus of the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop, and his work has been presented at venues including 54 Below in New York City and the Wallis Theatre in Beverly Hills. He continues to live in Brooklyn and remains active in the musical theatre community.
