Steve Greene Jeopardy Contestant Profile
Steven Greene is an American political science professor and public opinion expert based in Cary, North Carolina. He serves as a Professor of Political Science at North Carolina State University, where he has worked since 2002 within the School of Public and International Affairs. Greene is widely recognized for his expertise in American political behavior, public opinion, elections, political parties, gender and politics, media and politics, and North Carolina politics. Over the course of his academic career, his research has appeared in numerous leading peer-reviewed political science journals, including The American Political Science Review, Political Research Quarterly, Social Science Quarterly, and Gender and Politics. He is also the co-author of the book The Politics of Parenthood: Causes and Consequences of the Politicization of the American Family, written alongside Laurel Elder of Hartwick College.
Born on February 11, 1972, at Fairfax Hospital in Fairfax, Virginia, Greene spent most of his childhood in Springfield, Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C. Growing up close to the nation’s capital sparked his fascination with politics at a young age. He attended West Springfield High School and graduated in 1990 before enrolling at Duke University. At Duke, he majored in Political Science and History, earning his bachelor’s degree in 1994. Shortly after graduation, he married fellow Duke student Kim Faw on May 28, 1994, in Burnsville, North Carolina. The couple then moved to Columbus, Ohio, where both began graduate studies at Ohio State University. Greene earned his PhD in Political Science from Ohio State University in 1999.
Before joining NC State, Greene spent time teaching at Oberlin College and later at Texas Tech University. During this period, his family grew significantly. His eldest son, David, was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1999 while Greene was working at Oberlin College. His second son, Alex, was born in Lubbock, Texas, in 2002 during the family’s time at Texas Tech. After relocating to Cary, North Carolina, Greene and his wife welcomed two more children, Evan in 2006 and Sarah in 2010. Greene has often spoken publicly about balancing academic life with family life, and many of his research interests, particularly surrounding parenthood and politics, align closely with his personal experiences as a father of four.
Outside academia, Greene is heavily involved in public commentary and media analysis. He has appeared on networks and programs including CNN, CNBC, CBS Early Show, BBC-4, WRAL, WNCN, WTVD, and WUNC-TV. He has also contributed commentary to NPR and international radio stations in Canada, Jamaica, and Colombia. His analysis has been quoted in major publications such as The New York Times, Politico, Reuters, National Journal, The Times (UK), AFP, AP, Christian Science Monitor, and numerous international newspapers. Beyond politics, Greene enjoys hiking, reading, photography, nature observation, guitar playing, jogging, coaching youth soccer, and following Duke basketball. He has mentioned that, in another life, he may have pursued psychology, history, or biological anthropology instead of political science.
