Lea James Jeopardy Contestant Profile
Lea Gulotta James is an American litigation attorney based in Boston, Massachusetts, where she works as an Associate at the international law firm Foley & Lardner LLP. Since joining the firm in October 2019, she has handled all aspects of commercial litigation, including client counseling, discovery, mediation, trial preparation and dispute resolution. Her practice focuses heavily on clients in the life sciences sector, particularly pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device companies. She is a member of Foley’s Commercial Litigation Practice as well as its Government Enforcement Defense & Investigations group, with additional involvement in the firm’s Health Care & Life Sciences, Medical Devices, Pharmaceuticals and Racial Justice & Equity sectors. Her legal work includes regulatory enforcement matters, government investigations, compliance issues, product liability disputes and complex business litigation.
Before becoming an attorney, James built a scientific background in pharmaceutical research. Between May 2014 and July 2016 she worked as a Report Associate at Covance (now part of Labcorp), where she analyzed and presented data from preclinical studies, addressed Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) quality assurance issues and prepared study reports submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Her work included a particular focus on ocular drug studies, giving her valuable technical experience that now supports her litigation practice involving pharmaceutical and medical device companies.
James earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with additional studies in Chinese from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2014 before attending Vanderbilt University Law School, where she received her Juris Doctor (J.D.) in 2019. While at Vanderbilt she distinguished herself academically, serving as Executive Editor of the Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law during 2018–2019. She was named to the Dean’s List in Spring 2017 and Spring 2018, received the Vanderbilt Scholastic Excellence Awards in both Property Law and Mental Health Law, and completed more than 100 hours of pro bono legal service through the law school’s Pro Bono Pledge. During law school she also served as a Research Assistant to Professor Owen Jones, helping draft the second edition of the textbook Law and Neuroscience. Earlier, she completed summer associate positions with Foley & Lardner in both 2017 and 2018, experiences that ultimately led to her full-time employment at the firm after graduation.
In addition to her legal practice, James is active in professional writing and legal scholarship. She has co-authored articles on government enforcement and regulatory trends, including Antitrust Enforcement in Government Procurement (2025), examining the Procurement Collusion Strike Force, and previously authored When a Promise Isn’t Enough – Crafting Proper Employee Patent Assignments (JD Supra, 2018). She also published Pharming Out Data: A Proposal for Promoting Innovation and Public Health through a Hybrid Clinical Data Protection Scheme in the Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law in 2018. She is admitted to practice in Massachusetts, the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.
Outside her legal career, James serves as Vice President of the Emerging Leaders Board for the Boston Public Library Fund and has volunteered as a Vanderbilt University Law School Alumni Interviewer since 2019. She has also been a member of the Metropolitan Chorale since 2022. Her listed professional skills include research, public speaking, event planning, Microsoft Office, PowerPoint and time management. She speaks English and maintains an active professional presence on LinkedIn, where she has more than 500 connections and over 770 followers.
In 2025, James publicly reflected on a personal health challenge, revealing that she underwent treatment for breast cancer during 2024–2025 while continuing her legal practice. She described receiving radiation treatment while working on major matters and later undergoing surgery, crediting a senior colleague for providing exceptional personal and professional support throughout her diagnosis and recovery. The experience highlighted both her resilience and continued commitment to her career during a difficult period.
