Kayla Patel Jeopardy Contestant Profile

Kayla Patel is an American bioengineer and recent graduate originally from Mount Laurel, New Jersey, appearing as a contestant on Season 43 of Jeopardy!. Her academic and extracurricular background is heavily centered on bioengineering, healthcare technology, medical-device design, science communication and entrepreneurship, with additional longstanding interests in history, international affairs, writing and competitive academic events.

Patel grew up in South Jersey and attended Moorestown Friends School, graduating with the Class of 2021. She was a notably active and high-achieving student there, participating in science programs, Model United Nations, history competitions and independent research. She earned recognition as a National Merit Commended Scholar, was inducted into the Cum Laude Society, received the John “Doc” LaVia English Award, and was honored with a National Association of Biology Teachers Award and the Harold F. Bernhardt Award for her scientific achievements and commitment to STEM.

Her interest in academic competition developed early. As a freshman in 2018, Patel competed in the Southern New Jersey History Bee and Bowl, placing second in the individual History Bee and helping earn a third-place result in the team competition. Those performances qualified her for the National History Bee and Bowl Championships in Washington, D.C. She continued competing in history events later in high school, including varsity-level History Bee competition.

Patel was also deeply involved with Model United Nations. By her senior year she had become an experienced student leader, helping organize conferences involving schools from multiple countries and designing committees for a large virtual Model UN event. She earned awards at several conferences, including recognition while representing countries in bodies such as the World Health Organization and UNHCR. She has credited Model UN with strengthening her leadership, communication, organization and teamwork skills.

Science was another defining part of Patel’s high-school years. She participated in activities including Biology Club and Oncology Olympiad and sought out science programs during her summers. Before her junior year, she attended a regenerative medicine program at Harvard University, where she became particularly interested in stem cells and their possible applications in medicine and family planning.

For her senior capstone at Moorestown Friends, Patel created “Stem Cells 101,” an educational project intended to make complicated scientific concepts accessible to a broader audience. She researched stem-cell biology, applications, bioethics and ongoing scientific work before producing a seven-minute crash-course-style video using illustrations and stop-motion elements. Her goal was to reduce the perception that science is inaccessible or excessively difficult and to build educational tools that could explain sophisticated biomedical concepts in understandable ways.

After graduating from Moorestown Friends in 2021, Patel attended the University of Pennsylvania, where she studied Bioengineering and Chemistry as a member of the Class of 2025. Her undergraduate work combined engineering, medicine, entrepreneurship and healthcare innovation.

One of Patel’s major Penn projects was BullsEYE, an automated eye-drop dispensing system designed for patients with glaucoma and other chronic eye diseases. The system combined an eye-detection algorithm, automated dispensing mechanism and adherence-tracking mobile application with the aim of reducing wasted medication and helping patients follow treatment schedules more consistently.

BullsEYE was developed as part of Penn Engineering’s senior design program during the 2024–2025 academic year. Patel worked with a multidisciplinary team on aspects including hardware, circuitry, motor control, software integration, medical-device design and commercialization. The project was subsequently selected as one of approximately 15 finalists nationally at the University of Minnesota’s Design of Medical Devices Student Design Showcase, where Patel and her teammates presented the device and discussed its technical specifications, intellectual-property considerations, regulatory issues and commercialization prospects.

Patel has also demonstrated an interest in healthcare entrepreneurship. In 2023, she was part of a team that won a Wharton Undergraduate Healthcare Club and Penn Medicine case competition. Their proposal, called Koana, was designed to address emergency-department crowding and overuse by improving access to Penn Medicine’s telehealth services.

Earlier, in 2021, Patel participated in a Penn Climate Ventures ideathon, where her team proposed Economicalgae, a concept focused on making algae biofuels more practical by improving and circularizing the production process. The project placed fifth and gave Patel experience presenting technical and business ideas to industry professionals.

At Penn, Patel became involved with several organizations connecting engineering and medicine. She served as President of Engineers in Medicine (EMED) from approximately late 2023 through 2024. She also served on the Advancing Women in Engineering Student Advisory Board, where she became a committee lead for professional development and worked on efforts designed to support and expand opportunities for women in engineering.

From 2024 through graduation in 2025, Patel participated in Penn Engineering’s Student Ventures Committee, helping review entrepreneurship funding applications, conduct technical and business due diligence and make recommendations regarding student-led ventures.

Her interest in expanding opportunities for women in STEM also led her to work as a grant-writing intern with Girls Code the World. In that role she combined her interests in healthcare, innovation, entrepreneurship and gender equity while helping an organization focused on creating STEM opportunities for girls and young women.

Patel has substantial healthcare volunteer experience as well. From 2022 through 2024, she volunteered at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia as a patient-care “Bedside Buddy,” spending time with children across nursing units, helping keep patients comfortable and assisting nursing staff indirectly during care activities.

During university breaks she also volunteered in the Emergency Room at Virtua Mount Holly Hospital, where she helped with patient transport and comfort, relayed information between nursing stations and observed aspects of emergency-room intake and triage. In 2023 she also volunteered with Service Link at Penn, adding further direct exposure to healthcare services and patient support.

Patel’s interests extend beyond engineering. She has written about healthcare, medicine and technology, including an article examining the use of artificial intelligence in radiomics and another discussing the Narayana Health hospital model in India, particularly its ability to provide strong outcomes at comparatively low cost.

Writing has been important to her since high school. In 2020 she received a Gold Key in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for a short story. Her academic awards at Moorestown Friends also included recognition for English, showing that her strengths were not confined to STEM subjects.

After graduating from Penn in 2025, Patel continued her studies at the University of Oxford, entering a Master of Science program in Applied Digital Health for 2025–2026. The program closely aligns with her established interests in healthcare technology, digital medicine and the intersection between engineering and patient care.

Patel’s personal interests include mystery and classic novels, crime television, Bollywood music, exploring Philadelphia for food, and professional sports. She has described herself as a lifelong South Jersey resident and a devoted fan of the Philadelphia Eagles and Philadelphia 76ers.

Her Season 43 Jeopardy! appearance is also a natural extension of her long history with academic competition. Years before appearing on the show, she was competing in buzzer-based history competitions at regional and national levels. Her background combines broad academic curiosity with particularly deep experience in science, healthcare and engineering.
