Polly Bethea Jeopardy Contestant Profile

Polly d’Avignon Bethea is a creative director and award-winning designer from Athens, Texas, appearing on Jeopardy! as a contestant identified professionally as a Creative Director. Her career has been built around graphic design, branding, advertising, publishing and digital creative work, with particular strengths in visual identity, concept development and leading creative teams.

Bethea currently works with Blackhawk Network, where she has held a senior creative leadership role in Texas. Her professional background spans more than two decades and includes work in creative direction, graphic design, advertising development, publishing, copywriting and digital media. Colleagues have described her as someone who combines strong visual-design skills with technical understanding and the ability to interpret client needs while guiding broader creative strategy.

Her earlier professional experience includes roles in Lewisville, Frisco, Plano and Tyler, Texas, reflecting a career concentrated largely in the North and East Texas design and communications industries. Her portfolio has involved both print and digital projects, including branding, publication design, advertising, interactive work and corporate communications.

Bethea has received numerous awards for her design work. In 2011, she earned two Tabbie Award Honorable Mentions, one for Magazine Feature Design and another for Magazine Table of Contents Design. In 2010, she received a Silver Ozzie Award for Magazine Feature Design as well as a Silver Tabbie Award for Digital Imagery Magazine Cover Design.

Her recognition began even earlier during her academic and early professional years. In 2009, she received multiple awards from the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association, including recognition for advertisement design and photo illustration. In 2008, she earned a second-place Associated Collegiate Press award for Advertisement Design and numerous Texas Community College Journalism Association awards, including first-place honors in both layout and design and column writing. She also earned several additional TIPA awards that year for advertising, information graphics, single-subject presentation and news writing.

Bethea attended Rice University from 1999 to 2004. During her time at Rice, she participated in the university’s distinctive Beer Bike tradition and was involved with her residential-college team. In 2004, she was listed as a captain of a women’s chugging team, showing that she was actively engaged in Rice campus life as well as academics.

Her later education included additional study from 2007 to 2008, during a period when she was already developing a strong record in student media and visual design competitions. Her awards from that era show that she worked across a remarkably broad range of disciplines, including layout, advertising, photo illustration, infographics, news writing and column writing.

Professionally, Bethea has referred to herself as a “designerd,” reflecting the combination of creativity and technical curiosity that characterizes her work. Her public professional interests include visual identity, user experience, digital media, branding and design systems. Recommendations from people who have worked alongside her emphasize her ability to generate original concepts, lead other creatives and understand both the client-facing and technical sides of projects.
