CLUE: Established in 1938, this congressional group was still issuing subpoenas in 1969 & finally ceased to exist 6 years later
ANSWER: House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC)
About Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, 15 June 2023
The House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) was an investigating arm of the United States House of Representatives, formed in 1938. The committee’s main objective was to investigate and expose disloyalty and subversive activities by individuals or organizations suspected of communism. Initially meant to be temporary, it achieved permanent committee status in 1945.
In the late 1940s and 1950s, HUAC became infamous for probing into supposed communist threats within the U.S., specifically within the Hollywood film industry. These investigations led to the creation of the Hollywood blacklist, a policy that denied employment opportunities in the industry to individuals based on their political affiliations or beliefs, regardless of whether they were proven or merely suspected.
While its influence began to diminish from the late 1950s, HUAC persisted in its operations and continued issuing subpoenas till 1969. The committee was ultimately dissolved in 1975, with its duties reassigned to the House Judiciary Committee. Despite its official dissolution, the HUAC’s impact has been enduring, given its pivotal role in the Red Scare that marked the initial years of the Cold War.

Final Jeopardy is the final round of the popular American television game show Jeopardy!, in which participants test their knowledge in numerous areas by answering questions. In Final Jeopardy, participants are given a single clue and must wager a percentage of their existing earnings based on their confidence in their ability to successfully respond.
Each contestant surreptitiously writes down their wager during the commercial break. The Final Jeopardy clue is presented when the programme resumes, and participants have 30 seconds to write down their solution in the form of a question (e.g., “What is…?”). When the timer runs out, the host, reveals each contestant’s response and wager in ascending order of their pre-Final Jeopardy scores. The scores of contestants are adjusted based on whether their response is correct or incorrect, as well as the amount wagered. At the end of the round, the contestant with the highest score is proclaimed the winner.
