About Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, 3 May 2024
“Macarena,” performed by the Spanish duo Los del Río, became a global sensation in the mid-1990s, leaving a significant mark on popular music and dance culture. Originally released in 1993 on their album “A mí me gusta,” it wasn’t until a remix by the Bayside Boys in 1995 that the song gained massive international acclaim. The remix added English-language verses, making the song accessible to a broader audience, and its infectious rhythm quickly caught on. The lyrics tell the story of Macarena, a woman who, dissatisfied with her boyfriend Vitorino, decides to dance and have fun with his two friends instead. The upbeat and carefree nature of the song, combined with a distinctive dance routine that swept the world, made “Macarena” a staple at parties, weddings, and clubs.
The song’s widespread popularity is also due in large part to its accompanying dance, which was simple to learn and highly contagious. The Macarena dance, characterized by a series of hand movements, hip twists, and a jump, became a cultural phenomenon in its own right, often taught in schools, clubs, and homes. The song topped the charts in many countries and spent a record 14 weeks at the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1996. The song’s infectious beat and dance continue to evoke nostalgia for the ’90s and remain a defining example of a one-hit wonder that achieved global success.

Final Jeopardy is the final round of the popular American television game show Jeopardy!, in which participants test their knowledge in numerous areas by answering questions. In Final Jeopardy, participants are given a single clue and must wager a percentage of their existing earnings based on their confidence in their ability to successfully respond.
Each contestant surreptitiously writes down their wager during the commercial break. The Final Jeopardy clue is presented when the programme resumes, and participants have 30 seconds to write down their solution in the form of a question (e.g., “What is…?”). When the timer runs out, the host, reveals each contestant’s response and wager in ascending order of their pre-Final Jeopardy scores. The scores of contestants are adjusted based on whether their response is correct or incorrect, as well as the amount wagered. At the end of the round, the contestant with the highest score is proclaimed the winner.
