Carrie Klaus, a French professor at DePauw University, has a deep familial and educational connection with both the University of Illinois and her hometown of Eureka, Illinois. A Greencastle resident, she will be a contestant on the television show “Jeopardy!” on May 6th. Carrie graduated from DePauw University in 1993, majoring in English literature and French. She then earned her master’s and PhD in French from the University of Illinois, where her family’s legacy has left a strong mark, particularly on Lincoln Hall. Her father, Terry Ridgely Klaus, and grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Ridgely, also studied at the University of Illinois, where Ridgely became the first in the family to venture beyond Eureka and embrace higher education. Carrie’s father was deeply involved in the Men’s Glee Club, and Carrie herself participated in a German baroque choir. Currently, she is chair of the Department of Modern Languages at DePauw University and has an interest in women’s roles in 17th-century French politics, particularly during the Fronde. Her research includes time spent at the Folger Shakespeare Library and various libraries in France, where she delves into the political pamphlets of that era. She is especially intrigued by women’s voices, both real and imagined, in political discourse.
