Ellen Klages is an American writer who has received numerous awards for her work in science fiction, fantasy, and historical fiction. Born in 1954 in Columbus, Ohio, Klages now resides in San Francisco, California. She attended the University of Michigan, where she earned a degree in philosophy. Klages began her professional writing career by co-authoring children’s science activity books while working at the San Francisco Exploratorium, encouraged by science fiction author Pat Murphy. Klages’ first novelette, “Time Gypsy,” published in 1999, was a finalist for the Nebula and Hugo Awards. She has won multiple awards, including the Nebula Award for Best Novelette in 2005 for “Basement Magic” and the World Fantasy Award for her novella “Passing Strange.” Klages’ novel “The Green Glass Sea” won the 2007 Scott O’Dell Award for Historical Fiction. In addition to writing, Klages has performed stand-up comedy and served on the Motherboard of the James Tiptree Jr. Award for twenty years.
