About Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, 16 October 2023
The 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics was bestowed upon Barry Barish, Rainer Weiss, and Kip Thorne for their landmark discovery of gravitational waves. Upon receiving the award, Barry Barish emphasized that it also served as a significant “victory for Einstein.”
Albert Einstein had first speculated about the existence of these spacetime ripples in 1915, as part of his theory of general relativity. These gravitational waves, as they were later called, were theoretically produced during cataclysmic events in the cosmos, like the collision of massive celestial bodies. Although Einstein’s theory was highly regarded, the technology to prove the existence of these waves took many years to develop.
The trio of physicists were central figures in the LIGO Scientific Collaboration, an experiment that stands for Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory. The project was the result of years of global cooperation and technological innovation. Finally, in 2016, the first-ever detection of gravitational waves was announced, validating Einstein’s century-old theory and marking a pivotal moment in the scientific understanding of the universe.

Final Jeopardy is the final round of the popular American television game show Jeopardy!, in which participants test their knowledge in numerous areas by answering questions. In Final Jeopardy, participants are given a single clue and must wager a percentage of their existing earnings based on their confidence in their ability to successfully respond.
Each contestant surreptitiously writes down their wager during the commercial break. The Final Jeopardy clue is presented when the programme resumes, and participants have 30 seconds to write down their solution in the form of a question (e.g., “What is…?”). When the timer runs out, the host, reveals each contestant’s response and wager in ascending order of their pre-Final Jeopardy scores. The scores of contestants are adjusted based on whether their response is correct or incorrect, as well as the amount wagered. At the end of the round, the contestant with the highest score is proclaimed the winner.
