Sapana Vora, Ph.D., is an American biosecurity and national security policy professional currently serving as a Senior Professional Staff Member for the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs in Washington, D.C. With a strong background in biological science and international security policy, she has built a career focused on biosecurity, biodefense, and global health security, particularly examining how governments and international organizations can strengthen preparedness and cooperation to address biological threats. Her work centers on preventing and mitigating both natural outbreaks and intentional biological threats, including bioterrorism and risks associated with emerging biotechnology and advanced research practices.

Before joining the Senate committee in June 2023, Vora worked as a Senior Policy Advisor for Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) within the Office of the Secretary of Defense for Policy at the Pentagon, where she contributed to U.S. Department of Defense initiatives aimed at reducing and managing WMD threats. Earlier in her career she spent more than six years at the U.S. Department of State, where she began as an AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow in the Biosecurity Engagement Program and later became Deputy Team Chief for the Biosecurity Engagement Program, focusing on initiatives related to biosecurity engagement and international collaboration, including programs connected to counter-WMD efforts in Iraq.

During her graduate studies she led collaborative research projects examining genetic risk factors for leukemia and developed expertise in human genetics, genomics, and advanced research tools. Her work included applying Unix programming skills to large biological datasets, mentoring undergraduate and high school students, and supporting laboratory operations. Her research background includes published scientific work in journals such as Nature Communications, PLoS One, and Toxicology in Vitro.

Earlier in her academic career, Vora attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she graduated with Distinction with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and English (double major) and a minor in Chemistry. As an undergraduate she participated extensively in research and science outreach. She worked as a research assistant studying topics such as drug transport in hepatocytes and regulators of murine X-chromosome inactivation, gained laboratory experience in cell culture, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and animal research, and served as president of the campus organization Socially Conscious Science, which promoted science literacy and public discussion of scientific and ethical issues. She also completed summer research internships at GlaxoSmithKline focused on pharmacokinetics and drug transport research.
