Shannon Hughes Mastick is an accomplished patent attorney and partner at Marshall, Gerstein & Borun LLP, based in Chicago and residing in Granger, Indiana. Her work covers the full spectrum of domestic and international patent prosecution, including drafting applications, conducting examiner interviews, managing foreign agents, and preparing patentability, infringement, and freedom-to-operate opinions. With a practice focused on electrical and computer technologies, artificial intelligence, machine learning, medical devices, telecommunications, automation, and emerging tech, she advises clients ranging from Fortune 100 companies to universities and individual inventors. A University of Notre Dame alumna twice over, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Physics and Philosophy and later her Juris Doctor from Notre Dame Law School. Her academic achievements include the Dockweiler Medal for the best senior philosophy thesis, membership in the Sigma Pi Sigma physics honor society, the Glynn Family Honors Program, and law school distinctions such as the ABA-Bloomberg BNA Award for Excellence in the Study of Intellectual Property Law. She also studied abroad at John Cabot University in Rome.
Professionally, Shannon has been widely recognized. She has participated in both the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) Pathfinder and Fellowship Programs, and she has been selected for Illinois Rising Stars, The American Registry Top Attorneys, and Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch in America for Patent Law. She frequently writes and presents on topics such as robotics, medical device IP protection, and COVID-19 related software innovations.
Beyond her legal work, Shannon remains highly involved in women’s IP organizations, serving on the Chicago board of the Coalition of Women’s Initiatives in Law and maintaining active membership in IPLAC and ChiWIP. She also has a background in Notre Dame’s Baraka Bouts women’s boxing program, where she competed under the nickname “Motion to Strike” and supported mission-driven fundraising efforts. A devoted supporter of Notre Dame athletics, she has long been a loyal fan of the Fighting Irish and continues to attend numerous football games each season.
