About Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, 20 November 2023
Ulysses S. Grant, notable as the first among the seven U.S. Presidents born in Ohio, began his path to prominence by enrolling at West Point in 1839. Grant, who later became the 18th President of the United States, served two consecutive terms from 1869 to 1877.
Born in Point Pleasant, Ohio, on April 27, 1822, Grant’s early entrance into the United States Military Academy laid the groundwork for what would be a notable military career. His leadership during the Civil War was marked by key victories in battles such as Vicksburg and Chattanooga, earning him a reputation for bold tactics and resolute leadership. In 1864, he was appointed by President Abraham Lincoln as the commanding general of the Union Army, successfully leading the campaigns that culminated in Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s surrender in 1865, signaling the end of the war.
Grant’s presidency coincided with the Reconstruction era, a challenging period of rebuilding and reintegration following the Civil War. He was a staunch supporter of civil rights for freed slaves and took measures to suppress the activities of groups like the Ku Klux Klan. A significant achievement during his presidency was the ratification of the 15th Amendment, which extended voting rights to African American men.

Final Jeopardy is the final round of the popular American television game show Jeopardy!, in which participants test their knowledge in numerous areas by answering questions. In Final Jeopardy, participants are given a single clue and must wager a percentage of their existing earnings based on their confidence in their ability to successfully respond.
Each contestant surreptitiously writes down their wager during the commercial break. The Final Jeopardy clue is presented when the programme resumes, and participants have 30 seconds to write down their solution in the form of a question (e.g., “What is…?”). When the timer runs out, the host, reveals each contestant’s response and wager in ascending order of their pre-Final Jeopardy scores. The scores of contestants are adjusted based on whether their response is correct or incorrect, as well as the amount wagered. At the end of the round, the contestant with the highest score is proclaimed the winner.
