CLUE: A 1902 work says an enigmatic character has a half-English mom & a half-French dad, but this name of his is German for “short”
ANSWER: Mr. Kurtz
About Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, 6 February 2024
In “Heart of Darkness” by Joseph Conrad, the enigmatic Mr. Kurtz stands as a deeply complex figure. His heritage—a mother of English descent and a French father—combined with a German name that translates to “short,” significantly deepens the narrative’s dissection of European colonial mindsets and their effects on Africa. Kurtz holds a position with an ivory trading operation in the Congo, charged with gathering ivory from deep within the territory.
The story’s central character, Marlow, navigates the Congo River to find Kurtz, encountering along the way numerous tales of Kurtz’s remarkable intellect, persuasive speech, and perceived grandeur, which paint him as almost mythic. Yet, when Marlow finally meets him, he finds a Kurtz profoundly altered by the dark realities of colonial dominance. Having seized absolute control over the indigenous peoples, Kurtz has perpetrated extreme violence and exploitation, epitomizing the moral decay that can result from unchecked imperialistic power.
Kurtz’s haunting final words, “The horror! The horror!” serve as a chilling acknowledgment of his profound moral and spiritual collapse and a condemnation of imperialistic brutality at large. Kurtz, through his diverse background and the interpretive weight of his name, is portrayed as a critical commentary on the inhumanity of European colonialism and its justifying ideologies.

Final Jeopardy is the final round of the popular American television game show Jeopardy!, in which participants test their knowledge in numerous areas by answering questions. In Final Jeopardy, participants are given a single clue and must wager a percentage of their existing earnings based on their confidence in their ability to successfully respond.
Each contestant surreptitiously writes down their wager during the commercial break. The Final Jeopardy clue is presented when the programme resumes, and participants have 30 seconds to write down their solution in the form of a question (e.g., “What is…?”). When the timer runs out, the host, reveals each contestant’s response and wager in ascending order of their pre-Final Jeopardy scores. The scores of contestants are adjusted based on whether their response is correct or incorrect, as well as the amount wagered. At the end of the round, the contestant with the highest score is proclaimed the winner.
