About Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, 17 October 2023

The 1918 article, “Do Not Shoot At Pigeons,” published in The National Humane Review, asked hunters to abstain from targeting these birds because it was disrupting their specialized training by the U.S. Signal Corps. During WWI, these carrier pigeons served a vital function, transporting important messages across treacherous war zones when traditional communication methods were unfeasible or dangerous. Proper training of these birds was essential for effective military communications.

The U.S. Signal Corps faced obstacles in their training program due to hunters shooting the pigeons, either mistaking them for game or shooting them recreationally. The article stressed the need for hunters to stop this behavior, as it undermined the training and, consequently, the wartime effectiveness of these specially trained birds.

The use of homing pigeons for military communication dates back to before World War I. Their innate ability to navigate long distances made them invaluable messengers, capable of traversing hazardous environments to deliver essential information.

Final Jeopardy is the final round of the popular American television game show Jeopardy!, in which participants test their knowledge in numerous areas by answering questions. In Final Jeopardy, participants are given a single clue and must wager a percentage of their existing earnings based on their confidence in their ability to successfully respond.

Each contestant surreptitiously writes down their wager during the commercial break. The Final Jeopardy clue is presented when the programme resumes, and participants have 30 seconds to write down their solution in the form of a question (e.g., “What is…?”). When the timer runs out, the host, reveals each contestant’s response and wager in ascending order of their pre-Final Jeopardy scores. The scores of contestants are adjusted based on whether their response is correct or incorrect, as well as the amount wagered. At the end of the round, the contestant with the highest score is proclaimed the winner.
