Abby Mullen Jeopardy Contestant Profile

Abby Mullen, also professionally identified as Abigail Mullen, is an American historian, professor, author, digital-humanities scholar and podcast producer whose academic specialty is the early United States Navy, particularly the First Barbary War, maritime diplomacy and the United States’ emergence into the international system. The Greenville, South Carolina connection is consistent with her early education and employment: she earned both a B.A. and M.A. from Bob Jones University in Greenville, worked for BJU Press for roughly seven years, and subsequently taught as a graduate assistant in Bob Jones University’s English department. She later moved to Boston for doctoral study at Northeastern University and ultimately into the Washington–Baltimore academic community. She is now an Assistant Professor of History at the United States Naval Academy (USNA) in Annapolis, Maryland, where she teaches naval history. Northeastern records show that she obtained a tenure-track professorship at USNA beginning in fall 2022.

Mullen’s professional development is somewhat unusual because her early career was rooted in English, editing and publishing rather than history alone. She worked as an editor/proofreader at BJU Press from approximately May 2000 through August 2007, followed by service as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in Bob Jones University’s Department of English from August 2007 to May 2009. Public professional records indicate that she earned both her undergraduate and master’s degrees at Bob Jones University. This background in textual work later dovetailed with her interests in historical newspapers, digital humanities and computational approaches to historical texts.

She subsequently entered Northeastern University’s graduate history program, completing both further graduate study and ultimately a Ph.D. in History in 2017. Her LinkedIn records her Northeastern period as 2012–2017 with a 4.0 GPA. Her dissertation, “Good Neighbourhood with All: Conflict and Cooperation in the First Barbary War, 1801–1805,” investigated the diplomatic, military and interpersonal networks through which the young United States and its Navy operated in the Mediterranean during the conflict with Tripoli. Mullen became particularly interested in combining conventional archival history with digital mapping, network analysis and computational methods, and she was reportedly the first graduate student in Northeastern’s history department to adopt digital history as a minor field.

While at Northeastern, Mullen was a Graduate Teaching Assistant in History from approximately 2012–2015 and a Graduate Research Assistant on the Viral Texts Project from 2013–2016. Viral Texts uses computational techniques to trace how material was reprinted and circulated through nineteenth-century American newspapers. Her scholarship from this period included co-authored work such as “Computational Methods for Uncovering Reprinted Texts in Antebellum Newspapers” in American Literary History and “‘Fugitive Verses’: Poetry, Attribution, and Circulation in Nineteenth-Century American Newspapers” in American Periodicals.

Mullen also played an early role in bringing digital-humanities methodologies into military history. In 2014, while still a doctoral student, she helped conceive and organize the NEH-supported Digital Methods for Military History workshop with Northeastern professor Heather Streets-Salter. The workshop introduced military and diplomatic historians to methods including digital network analysis and GIS/mapping. Mullen explained at the time that she saw surprisingly little overlap between digital history and military history and wanted to help bridge those fields.

After completing her doctorate, Mullen joined George Mason University’s Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media (RRCHNM). Northeastern records list her initial post-Ph.D. destination in 2017 as Project Manager at RRCHNM; other professional records place her in that position from approximately May 2016 through September 2018. She subsequently became Co-Principal Investigator of Tropy, a Mellon Foundation-supported research tool designed to help scholars organize and describe photographs of archival research materials. She was also technical lead for All the Appalachian Trails, an interactive project mapping the history of the Appalachian Trail.

Mullen then became a Term Assistant Professor of History at George Mason University, serving from approximately August 2019 through June 2022. She taught both digital history and military history, combining the two strands of her research career. Her teaching included American naval history, while her work at RRCHNM continued to connect historical scholarship with software, digital research infrastructure and public-facing history.

Another major component of Mullen’s work is podcasting and public history. She founded R2 Studios at George Mason’s Roy Rosenzweig Center and served as its first head. She created, hosted and executive-produced Consolation Prize, a podcast examining the history of American diplomacy through the experiences of U.S. consuls. She was also executive producer of the first season of The Green Tunnel, a podcast about the history of the Appalachian Trail. In addition, she has produced Big If True, an educational podcast for children in which she and her child talk with experts about large or unusual questions.

In fall 2022, Mullen accepted a tenure-track position at the United States Naval Academy. She is currently listed by USNA as an Assistant Professor in its History Department and participates in Naval Academy History Productions, where she is an affiliate podcast producer and host of Consolation Prize. She also periodically hosts or appears on USNA’s Preble Hall naval-history podcast. Her current academic identity therefore spans conventional university teaching, naval and diplomatic scholarship, digital humanities and public-history production.

Mullen’s major monograph, To Fix a National Character: The United States in the First Barbary War, 1800–1805, was published by Johns Hopkins University Press in 2024. The book examines more than simply the combat of the Barbary War: it considers how the fledgling United States attempted to establish itself within an international community in the Mediterranean and how naval personnel, consular officials and other participants navigated a region in which the United States had little established infrastructure or power. Her more recent research has turned toward the family of Henry Wadsworth, a U.S. Navy midshipman killed during the bombardment of Tripoli in September 1804.
