ANSWER: Jules Verne

About Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, 12 April 2024

Jules Verne, renowned for his visionary science fiction novels that captivated audiences with tales of extraordinary voyages and technological marvels, left behind numerous manuscripts that were unpublished at the time of his death in 1905. His son, Michel Verne, inherited these literary works and took upon himself the responsibility of bringing them to the public. However, Michel did more than simply publish these manuscripts; he extensively revised them, often altering plots, characters, and themes to suit what he believed would be more appealing to the contemporary audience. One such example is “The Chase of the Golden Meteor,” which was originally conceived by Jules Verne as “The Hunt for the Meteor.” Michel not only changed the title but also transformed the narrative, adding new characters and modifying the storyline significantly.

These posthumous publications, while extending Jules Verne’s literary legacy, have sparked debates among scholars and fans alike regarding the authenticity of Michel’s versions. Critics argue that Michel’s alterations may have strayed from Jules Verne’s original vision, potentially distorting the author’s intended messages and thematic focuses. Despite these controversies, the novels published by Michel Verne have contributed to keeping his father’s fame alive, introducing new generations to Jules Verne’s imaginative worlds. Yet, they also complicate the understanding of Verne’s true contributions to literature, as distinguishing between Jules’ original thoughts and Michel’s revisions can be challenging. These posthumously published works, including the adventure around a golden meteor, reflect not just a continuation of a literary name, but also an intersection of legacy and adaptation, as Michel reinterpreted his father’s ideas to meet new literary tastes and expectations.

Each contestant surreptitiously writes down their wager during the commercial break. The Final Jeopardy clue is presented when the programme resumes, and participants have 30 seconds to write down their solution in the form of a question (e.g., “What is…?”). When the timer runs out, the host, reveals each contestant’s response and wager in ascending order of their pre-Final Jeopardy scores. The scores of contestants are adjusted based on whether their response is correct or incorrect, as well as the amount wagered.
