Andy Briseño Jeopardy Contestant Profile
Andy Briseño, who also publishes professionally as Dr. J. Andrew Briseño, is an American novelist, short fiction writer, creative writing professor, and literary editor based in Natchitoches, Louisiana. He serves as an Associate Professor of English at Northwestern State University of Louisiana (NSU), where he specializes in Creative Writing, teaching upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses focused on fiction writing, Chicanx literature, and Latinx literature. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Briseño founded and coordinates the Cane River Reading Series, an initiative that brings regional and nationally recognized authors to Natchitoches to promote literature and creative writing within the community. He also serves as the Series Editor for the Katherine Anne Porter Prize in Short Fiction, one of the most respected literary awards for short fiction.
Briseño earned a PhD in Fiction/Creative Writing from the University of North Texas, establishing an academic career centered on both literary scholarship and creative practice. As a Chicano writer with a mixed Anglo and Mexican family background, much of his work explores themes of race, identity, belonging, family history, cultural heritage, and the complexities of living between multiple identities. His fiction frequently incorporates Southwestern settings, Chicano cultural experiences, magical realism, and autobiographical influences.
His published work has appeared in respected literary journals including SmokeLong Quarterly, Waxwing, The Acentos Review, and The Boiler, among others. Notable works include the flash fiction piece “Next Scene from the Movie Giant”, inspired by Tino Villanueva’s Scene from the Movie GIANT and the 1956 film Giant. The story examines racism, interracial identity, and inherited trauma through experimental narrative techniques including second-person narration. In interviews, Briseño has discussed how his own upbringing shaped his writing. His mother is Anglo while his father is Chicano, and he has spoken candidly about growing up feeling caught between racial identities, describing the challenges of identifying as both and neither. He has explained that many of his stories blur the line between memoir and fiction, using personal experiences as a foundation while reshaping them through storytelling.
Briseño has also written deeply personal creative nonfiction, including “Four Things About My Father’s Father,” which recounts painful episodes involving his paternal grandfather. The piece describes domestic violence directed at his pregnant grandmother, racist attitudes displayed by his grandfather during Briseño’s childhood, estrangement within the family, and Briseño’s own rejection of sharing his grandfather’s name. The essay explores cycles of violence, inherited trauma, family identity, and the determination to define oneself independently of previous generations.
Outside academia and literature, Briseño demonstrated his broad general knowledge by being selected as a contestant on Jeopardy! during the syndicated show’s July 2025 season.
