ANSWER: Mount Rainier

About Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, 26 April 2024

Mount Rainier, standing at 14,410 feet, is not only a majestic peak but also a central figure in the geographical and cultural landscape of Washington state. As an active stratovolcano, it is one of the most prominent mountains in the Cascade Range, known for its scenic beauty and the challenging climbing opportunities it offers. Beyond its recreational appeal, Mount Rainier holds a significant hydrological role, being the source of the Puyallup, Cowlitz, Nisqually, and Carbon rivers, among others. Its extensive glacial system, one of the most substantial in the continental United States outside of Alaska, acts as a vast reservoir feeding these rivers. The Indigenous names such as “Tahoma” or “Tacoma,” which translate to implications of “mother of waters” or “bring the water,” aptly describe the mountain’s critical role in sustaining the surrounding ecosystems and communities, which rely on the waters that originate from its glaciers.

The Puyallup tribe’s naming of Mount Rainier as “Tahoma” signifies deep reverence and a profound connection to the landscape that is typical of Indigenous relationships with nature. These names are not just labels but encapsulate narratives and teachings about the mountain’s creation, significance, and its bounteous provision of water and life. In recent times, there has been a growing movement to recognize these traditional names alongside or even in place of colonial names, as part of a broader cultural recognition and respect for Indigenous histories and rights. This acknowledgment serves to honor the deep-seated heritage and the ancestral ties that native tribes have with Mount Rainier, reinforcing the mountain’s identity as a living entity deeply woven into the cultural fabric of the Native American tribes of the Pacific Northwest. Such efforts are crucial in preserving these cultures and reminding contemporary society of the enduring stewardship role these communities have played in managing and respecting natural landscapes over millennia.

Final Jeopardy is the final round of the popular American television game show Jeopardy!, in which participants test their knowledge in numerous areas by answering questions. In Final Jeopardy, participants are given a single clue and must wager a percentage of their existing earnings based on their confidence in their ability to successfully respond.

Each contestant surreptitiously writes down their wager during the commercial break. The Final Jeopardy clue is presented when the programme resumes, and participants have 30 seconds to write down their solution in the form of a question (e.g., “What is…?”). When the timer runs out, the host, reveals each contestant’s response and wager in ascending order of their pre-Final Jeopardy scores. The scores of contestants are adjusted based on whether their response is correct or incorrect, as well as the amount wagered. At the end of the round, the contestant with the highest score is proclaimed the winner.
