About Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, 12 December 2023

In Chapter 100 of Herman Melville’s “Moby-Dick,” readers are introduced to Captain Boomer of the Samuel Enderby, a character who contrasts sharply with Captain Ahab. “Moby-Dick,” renowned for its detailed storytelling and rich symbolism focused on the hunt for the titular whale, uses these characters to explore deeper themes.

Captain Boomer, leading the British whaler Samuel Enderby, maintains a cheerful and relaxed demeanor despite having lost an arm to Moby-Dick. His encounter with Ahab reveals a brief connection as they exchange tales about the same whale. Yet, unlike Ahab, Boomer doesn’t harbor a vengeful obsession. He views his encounter with the whale as an occupational hazard, choosing acceptance and moving forward rather than dwelling on his loss.

On the other hand, Ahab’s experience with Moby-Dick has instilled in him an intense, all-consuming desire for revenge. The loss of his leg to the whale ignites a fanatical quest for vengeance, leading him to relentlessly pursue the creature. This obsession is catastrophic, culminating in the demise of his ship, the Pequod, and most of its crew.

The contrast between Boomer and Ahab in “Moby-Dick” is a pivotal aspect of the novel’s narrative. It highlights the central theme of Ahab’s destructive obsession. Boomer’s practical and distant view of his whale encounter serves as a foil to Ahab’s fixation on revenge, offering a different perspective on dealing with trauma and adversity.

Final Jeopardy is the final round of the popular American television game show Jeopardy!, in which participants test their knowledge in numerous areas by answering questions. In Final Jeopardy, participants are given a single clue and must wager a percentage of their existing earnings based on their confidence in their ability to successfully respond.

Each contestant surreptitiously writes down their wager during the commercial break. The Final Jeopardy clue is presented when the programme resumes, and participants have 30 seconds to write down their solution in the form of a question (e.g., “What is…?”). When the timer runs out, the host, reveals each contestant’s response and wager in ascending order of their pre-Final Jeopardy scores. The scores of contestants are adjusted based on whether their response is correct or incorrect, as well as the amount wagered. At the end of the round, the contestant with the highest score is proclaimed the winner.
