Cynthia Appiah, known in sports circles as Cynthia Appiah OLY, is a Canadian bobsledder born on May 15, 1990, in North York, Ontario. Raised in Toronto, she is the daughter of Ghanaian immigrants James and Mary Appiah. Her athletic journey began early when she joined the Toronto Blue Jays Rookie League at the age of eight, marking the start of her connection to organized sports. Over time, Appiah discovered her passion and strength in athletics, particularly in track and field, before transitioning to bobsleigh—a sport that would later define her career.

Before her bobsleigh career took off, Appiah attended York University, where she competed as a thrower in shot put and hammer throw events. Her natural athletic ability and dedication earned her recognition as York’s Female Athlete of the Year for 2012–2013. In addition to her sporting achievements, she graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Arts in history and a minor in psychology. She briefly represented Canada at the NACAC U23 Championships in 2012. While at York, she was first introduced to bobsleigh during a Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton (BCS) test camp held at her university. Though she initially declined to pursue the opportunity to complete her degree, she would later return to the sport and make her debut on the North American Cup circuit in 2013.

Appiah’s early years as a brakewoman were marked by success, including pushing Canadian Olympic champions such as Kaillie Humphries and Alysia Rissling to medal finishes. She was recognized as one of Canada’s top brakewomen leading up to the 2018 Winter Olympics but was ultimately named as an alternate, a setback that nearly ended her career. Instead, Appiah used that experience as motivation to switch to the pilot position, where she found new purpose and success. By 2019, she set an Ice House start record from the pilot bar and was later awarded the L. Lamont Gordon Award for embodying the spirit of Team Canada.

Her career continued to rise with appearances in international competitions, including the 2021 IBSF World Championships and her Olympic debut at Beijing 2022, where she placed eighth in both the monobob and two-woman events. Outside of sport, Appiah is also known for her advocacy work. She serves as an ambassador for several charitable organizations, including the Jays Care Foundation, Fast and Female, and Classroom Champions. Through these initiatives, she promotes inclusivity and empowerment for youth, especially young girls in sports.

In addition to her athletic and advocacy achievements, Appiah made headlines in 2025 when she fulfilled a lifelong dream of appearing on the quiz show “Jeopardy.” Having applied for over six years, she finally got the opportunity to compete, taping her episode in Los Angeles between training sessions. Despite juggling a demanding training schedule for the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Appiah embraced the experience, describing it as one of the most memorable moments of her life. Her drive, resilience, and enthusiasm continue to define her both as an athlete and as a public figure representing Canadian excellence and perseverance.
