CLUE: First detected in the sun’s atmosphere in 1868, it got its name from an old word for sun

ANSWER: Helium

About Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, 23 November 2023

Discovered in the sun’s atmosphere in 1868, the element Helium gets its name from “Helios,” the ancient Greek word for the sun. This discovery was made independently by Jules Janssen, a French astronomer, and Joseph Norman Lockyer, an English astronomer, who noticed a unique yellow spectral line in sunlight during a solar eclipse, indicating the presence of an unknown element not yet found on Earth. The element was therefore named after the Greek sun god, Helios, acknowledging its first detection in solar matter.

Helium holds the position as the second most lightweight element in the periodic table and is distinguished by having the lowest boiling and melting points among all elements. These properties make it extremely valuable in various scientific and industrial applications, including cryogenics and in the superconducting magnets used in MRI scanners. Additionally, helium is employed in arc welding as a protective gas, in aerospace for pressurizing and purging systems, and popularly for inflating balloons and airships, although its usage for lighter-than-air craft is less common now due to its scarcity and higher value in other applications.

Final Jeopardy is the final round of the popular American television game show Jeopardy!, in which participants test their knowledge in numerous areas by answering questions. In Final Jeopardy, participants are given a single clue and must wager a percentage of their existing earnings based on their confidence in their ability to successfully respond.

Each contestant surreptitiously writes down their wager during the commercial break. The Final Jeopardy clue is presented when the programme resumes, and participants have 30 seconds to write down their solution in the form of a question (e.g., “What is…?”). When the timer runs out, the host, reveals each contestant’s response and wager in ascending order of their pre-Final Jeopardy scores. The scores of contestants are adjusted based on whether their response is correct or incorrect, as well as the amount wagered. At the end of the round, the contestant with the highest score is proclaimed the winner.
