His epitaph, in a church in England, reads, “Sometime General in the Army of George Washington”

Benedict Arnold, born on January 14, 1741, is infamous for his treacherous actions during the American Revolutionary War. He initially served as an American military officer, distinguishing himself in the Continental Army under General George Washington. Yet, disenchanted by his treatment from the Continental Congress and burdened by financial troubles, he plotted to betray his country and join the British forces.

In 1780, Arnold’s scheme to hand over the strategically crucial West Point fort to the British was exposed, but he managed to avoid capture. He later served as a Brigadier General in the British Army, leading attacks against American troops.

After the war, Arnold relocated to London, where he spent the rest of his life. He passed away on June 14, 1801, and was interred at St. Mary’s Church in Battersea, London. His tombstone bears the inscription “Sometime General in the Army of George Washington” and also notes, “The two nations whom he served in turn in the years of the enmity have united in enduring friendship”.
