About Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, 17 July 2023

The phrase in question from today’s Final Jeopardy round comes from a letter dated August 7, 1867. This letter was written by then-U.S. Secretary of State William H. Seward to General Lovell Rousseau. In this letter, Seward states, “On arriving at Sitka, the principal town in the ceded territory, you will receive from the Russian Commissioner the formal transfer of that territory.”

Seward’s directive pertains to his crucial role in securing the purchase of Alaska from Russia. He is giving instructions to Rousseau, who had been appointed to handle the Alaska purchase transaction, about the formal territorial transfer that would take place in Sitka, Alaska.

This acquisition, initially derided as “Seward’s Folly” or “Seward’s Icebox,” added over 600,000 square miles to the United States. Despite early criticism, the Alaska Purchase proved to be of immense value to the nation due to its rich natural resources and strategic geopolitical location. Alaska commemorates the day of this historic transfer every year as Alaska Day.

Final Jeopardy is the final round of the popular American television game show Jeopardy!, in which participants test their knowledge in numerous areas by answering questions. In Final Jeopardy, participants are given a single clue and must wager a percentage of their existing earnings based on their confidence in their ability to successfully respond.

Each contestant surreptitiously writes down their wager during the commercial break. The Final Jeopardy clue is presented when the programme resumes, and participants have 30 seconds to write down their solution in the form of a question (e.g., “What is…?”). When the timer runs out, the host, reveals each contestant’s response and wager in ascending order of their pre-Final Jeopardy scores. The scores of contestants are adjusted based on whether their response is correct or incorrect, as well as the amount wagered. At the end of the round, the contestant with the highest score is proclaimed the winner.
