About Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, 15 December 2023

In “Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail,” a 1888 publication, Theodore Roosevelt likened the abilities of his ranch hands, Bill Sewall and Wilmot Dow, to those of a bull moose. Roosevelt remarked, “There could have been no better men for a trip of this kind than my two companions, Sewall and Dow. They were tough, hardy, resolute fellows, quick as cats, strong as bears, and able to travel like bull moose.”

This analogy with the bull moose, recognized for its robustness, stamina, and skill in navigating tough landscapes, underscored the hardiness and competence of his ranch hands. As someone deeply engaged with the outdoors and an astute observer of the natural world, Roosevelt frequently drew comparisons between the attributes he admired in wildlife and those he valued in humans. The bull moose, emblematic of strength and tenacity in the wild, perfectly encapsulated the qualities needed to thrive in the challenging conditions of the American West at that time.

Final Jeopardy is the final round of the popular American television game show Jeopardy!, in which participants test their knowledge in numerous areas by answering questions. In Final Jeopardy, participants are given a single clue and must wager a percentage of their existing earnings based on their confidence in their ability to successfully respond.

Each contestant surreptitiously writes down their wager during the commercial break. The Final Jeopardy clue is presented when the programme resumes, and participants have 30 seconds to write down their solution in the form of a question (e.g., “What is…?”). When the timer runs out, the host, reveals each contestant’s response and wager in ascending order of their pre-Final Jeopardy scores. The scores of contestants are adjusted based on whether their response is correct or incorrect, as well as the amount wagered. At the end of the round, the contestant with the highest score is proclaimed the winner.
