About Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, 14 July 2023

In 1930, acclaimed author John Steinbeck penned “Murder at Full Moon,” a departure from his usual exploration of the human experience and the socio-economic disparities prevalent in society. This novel, written under the pseudonym Peter Pym, veers into the supernatural and horror genres, focusing on a fictional Californian town terrorized by a murderous werewolf during the full moon.

The book, blending elements of horror and mystery, offers a unique perspective of Steinbeck’s storytelling ability, contrasting with his more well-known narratives. Unfortunately, despite its intriguing plot, the manuscript was not accepted by his publishers.

The unpublished novel now resides within an archive at the University of Texas in Austin, hidden away from the public eye.

More commonly, Steinbeck is remembered for his contributions to literature with seminal works such as “East of Eden,” “The Grapes of Wrath,” and “Of Mice and Men,” which shed light on the struggles and resilience of the working class, firmly rooted in the socio-economic context of their time. Steinbeck’s profound insights into the human condition earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Final Jeopardy is the final round of the popular American television game show Jeopardy!, in which participants test their knowledge in numerous areas by answering questions. In Final Jeopardy, participants are given a single clue and must wager a percentage of their existing earnings based on their confidence in their ability to successfully respond.

Each contestant surreptitiously writes down their wager during the commercial break. The Final Jeopardy clue is presented when the programme resumes, and participants have 30 seconds to write down their solution in the form of a question (e.g., “What is…?”). When the timer runs out, the host, reveals each contestant’s response and wager in ascending order of their pre-Final Jeopardy scores. The scores of contestants are adjusted based on whether their response is correct or incorrect, as well as the amount wagered. At the end of the round, the contestant with the highest score is proclaimed the winner.
