Jean-Paul Sartre penned a memorial to Albert Camus, the French-Algerian writer and philosopher who died in an automobile accident in 1960. “Victorious attempt… to snatch every instant of his existence from his future death,” Sartre’s statements presumably refer to Camus’ passionate devotion to life and existentialist ideals.
Albert Camus was a literary and philosophical figure best known for his writings “The Stranger,” “The Plague,” “The Fall,” and “The Myth of Sisyphus.” In 1957, he was awarded the Nobel Prise in Literature.
Though Camus and Sartre disagreed on philosophy, Sartre’s tribute to Camus reveals a genuine regard for his former friend’s devotion to living life to the fullest, despite the inevitability of death.
