John McCain’s military career reached a critical juncture on October 26, 1967, during an aerial bombing mission over North Vietnam. As he piloted his A-4 Skyhawk over Hanoi, McCain’s aircraft was struck by a surface-to-air missile, forcing him to eject at a low altitude. The impact of his ejection severely broke his right leg and both arms. He parachuted into Truc Bach Lake in Hanoi, where he was quickly surrounded by a hostile crowd, beaten, and subsequently captured by North Vietnamese forces. The physical injuries he sustained during the ejection and his initial capture were exacerbated by inadequate medical treatment, marking the beginning of a harrowing experience that would test his endurance and resolve.
Upon capture, McCain was taken to Hoa Lo Prison, infamously nicknamed the “Hanoi Hilton” by the American POWs held there. This prison, originally constructed by the French colonizers in the 1880s to detain Vietnamese revolutionaries, was utilized by North Vietnam during the Vietnam War to house, interrogate, and torture captured American servicemen. The conditions in Hoa Lo were notoriously harsh; prisoners were subjected to prolonged solitary confinement, severe physical abuse, and psychological torture aimed at extracting military information and coercing propaganda statements. McCain, due to his father’s high-ranking position in the U.S. Navy, was offered early release as a propaganda move by his captors. However, adhering to the military code of conduct which dictated that POWs should be released in the order they were captured, he refused, resulting in further brutal treatment.
John McCain’s ordeal in Hoa Lo Prison lasted more than five years, during which his resilience and leadership helped sustain his fellow prisoners and fortify their collective resolve. Despite the harsh conditions, McCain and other POWs developed covert communication methods and maintained a structured resistance against their captors to uphold morale. His experience at Hoa Lo became a defining element of his personal and professional life, shaping his future perspectives on war and foreign policy. After his release in 1973 following the Paris Peace Accords, McCain returned to the United States and eventually entered politics, where he continued to serve with distinction. His time as a POW underscored his subsequent legislative focus on national defense, veterans’ rights, and human rights, reflecting his profound commitment to service and country, principles he upheld throughout his tenure as a U.S. Senator.

Final Jeopardy is the final round of the popular American television game show Jeopardy!, in which participants test their knowledge in numerous areas by answering questions. In Final Jeopardy, participants are given a single clue and must wager a percentage of their existing earnings based on their confidence in their ability to successfully respond.
Each contestant surreptitiously writes down their wager during the commercial break. The Final Jeopardy clue is presented when the programme resumes, and participants have 30 seconds to write down their solution in the form of a question (e.g., “What is…?”). When the timer runs out, the host, reveals each contestant’s response and wager in ascending order of their pre-Final Jeopardy scores. The scores of contestants are adjusted based on whether their response is correct or incorrect, as well as the amount wagered. At the end of the round, the contestant with the highest score is proclaimed the winner.
