About Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, 2 May 2024

France’s achievement of launching the Astérix satellite in 1965 marked a significant milestone in the global space race. At a time when space exploration was primarily dominated by the United States and the Soviet Union, France’s successful satellite launch positioned the nation as the third independent country to reach space, underscoring its technological prowess. Astérix, named after the popular French comic character, was launched on November 26, 1965, from the Hammaguir Test Range in Algeria. This site was strategically important during the period of decolonization, which concluded with Algeria’s independence in 1962, and its use by France in subsequent years demonstrated the shifting geopolitical realities of the time. The launch was executed using a Diamant A rocket, showcasing French innovation in developing indigenous spaceflight technology.

The significance of the Astérix launch went beyond the immediate technical achievement; it marked the beginning of France’s active participation in the rapidly expanding field of space exploration. The success of the mission laid the groundwork for future French and European space initiatives, eventually leading to the formation of the French Space Agency (CNES) and France’s central role in the European Space Agency (ESA). Astérix’s launch proved France’s capacity for independent satellite development and launch, reinforcing its status as a significant player in global space exploration. The impact of this achievement is still evident today, as France remains a leader in aerospace technology and continues to play a crucial role in international space collaborations.

Final Jeopardy is the final round of the popular American television game show Jeopardy!, in which participants test their knowledge in numerous areas by answering questions. In Final Jeopardy, participants are given a single clue and must wager a percentage of their existing earnings based on their confidence in their ability to successfully respond.

Each contestant surreptitiously writes down their wager during the commercial break. The Final Jeopardy clue is presented when the programme resumes, and participants have 30 seconds to write down their solution in the form of a question (e.g., “What is…?”). When the timer runs out, the host, reveals each contestant’s response and wager in ascending order of their pre-Final Jeopardy scores. The scores of contestants are adjusted based on whether their response is correct or incorrect, as well as the amount wagered. At the end of the round, the contestant with the highest score is proclaimed the winner.
