John E. Reiss is a professional with extensive experience in education, writing, editing, and social media management. He currently serves as the first in-house editor for the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies, a position he has held since September 2022. His expertise lies in various fields, including online education, academic editing and publishing, and international law, with specific interests in international human rights, post-conflict development, and cultural competence.

In addition to his role at the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies, John has a significant background in international education. Over the years, he has taught at various universities and institutions in the United States, Spain, Chile, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Somalia. His teaching has covered diverse subjects, including academic writing, English as a foreign language, international criminal law, and the law of the sea. John is particularly passionate about online education and has written numerous lessons for online learning platforms, contributing to the expansion of digital education.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, John worked in the private sector as an editor and media producer for a tech start-up in Honolulu. Additionally, he was an observer at the 2014 Universal Periodic Review of North Korea at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva. There, he and his colleagues presented a report on humanitarian aid to Ambassador Bob King, the U.S. Special Envoy for North Korean Human Rights Issues.

In terms of education, John holds a Bachelor of Science in anthropology from the University of Utah, a Master of Arts in Diplomacy from Norwich University, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Hawaii’s William S. Richardson School of Law. He also holds a certificate of specialization in Pacific-Asian legal studies. An avid traveler, John has visited over 50 countries and territories across six continents. A lifelong fan of the San Francisco Giants, he currently resides in Honolulu, Hawaii, having moved there in 2012 from his hometown of San Francisco, California.
