Jon Barilone Jeopardy Contestant Profile

Jon Barilone is a public relations, strategic communications and digital marketing consultant based in Aliso Viejo, California, appearing on Jeopardy! as a contestant identified as a Public Relations & Marketing Consultant. He has more than 16 years of experience in marketing and communications, with particularly deep expertise in local government communications, digital strategy, social media, public engagement, content development and public relations.

Barilone has spent a significant part of his career advising California cities and public agencies. He previously worked at Tripepi Smith, a communications and public-affairs consultancy focused heavily on local government. During his time there he progressed into a Principal role and became one of the firm’s senior communications strategists.

At Tripepi Smith, Barilone ultimately worked with approximately 100 California local government agencies, helping them improve external communications through integrated marketing campaigns, communications planning, digital strategy, social media and public engagement. Earlier professional biographies cited work with more than 40 cities, reflecting how substantially his public-agency portfolio grew over time.

His expertise encompasses search-engine optimization, digital advertising, website content management, writing and editing, product marketing, social-media marketing, online community management and brand strategy. He has also developed particular expertise in helping public agencies understand and adopt newer digital tools, including generative artificial intelligence.

Barilone has frequently shared that expertise with other government communications professionals. He has served as a presenter and trainer for organizations such as the California Association of Public Information Officials, speaking on topics including social-media strategy, measuring digital communications, public engagement and the use of AI tools by public-sector communicators.

In 2025, Barilone joined the Institute for Local Government as Senior Program Manager for Marketing & Communications. In that position he worked on communications supporting California local governments and public-service programs, drawing on his extensive experience with municipalities, special districts and other agencies.

His tenure there ended after his position was eliminated because of organizational funding issues. Following that change, he returned his attention to consulting and sought senior-level opportunities in marketing, communications, public relations and content, particularly with public agencies, nonprofits and mission-driven organizations working in areas such as local government, education, conservation, clean energy and community affairs.

Barilone’s professional career before Tripepi Smith also included several digital-marketing and community-management roles. He worked as a Community Manager for Connected Learning Alliance, where he managed online community development, measurement and programming. His responsibilities included a webinar series that reached participants in more than 135 countries.

Earlier, he worked as a Social Media Specialist for Corinthian Colleges, overseeing online communities spanning several brands and tens of thousands of members. He created systems for measuring brand sentiment and produced reports designed to help executives understand public perception and online engagement.

He also worked in online reputation management, including a director-level role focused on managing how individuals and organizations appeared in search engines and online media. This early experience helps explain his longstanding interest in search-engine optimization, reputation management and digital communications.

Barilone attended Claremont McKenna College from 2002 to 2006, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Literature. He was highly involved in campus activities, including Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Track & Field, where he was a letterman.

His college involvement also reflected his later communications career. He served as Managing Editor of The Forum, worked as a Copy Editor for The Student Life, and contributed writing and photography to the college yearbook. He participated in intramural sports throughout his four undergraduate years and performed community service at a convalescent home.

Barilone has continued his professional education throughout his career. His training and credentials have included certifications involving Hootsuite, Google, YouTube, Twitter and other social and digital platforms, as well as a professional certificate in Advanced Public Engagement for Local Government.

Trivia has been one of Barilone’s major personal interests for decades, and his Jeopardy! appearance represents the culmination of an especially long effort to reach the show. He has described becoming a Jeopardy! contestant or champion as a lifelong goal and documented his attempts to make the program over many years.

His game-show experience actually began in 2002, when he participated in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire – Play It! at Disney California Adventure. He won the audience’s fastest-finger competition to earn a place in the hot seat and progressed to the 64,000-point question, ultimately leaving with prizes from the 32,000-point level.

Barilone began taking the official Jeopardy! online test in 2016. He successfully reached the show’s contestant pool in 2020, although he was not selected to compete at that time. He continued trying and returned to the contestant pool in July 2026, finally progressing to an appearance on the program.

He also competed on Game Show Network’s Master Minds in 2023. Barilone won the contestant portion of his episode and earned $1,000, before facing Master Mind Jonathan Corbblah in the final round. Later that year, he attended Game Show Boot Camp in Las Vegas and finished among the top 16 of approximately 45 participants.

In October 2024, Barilone turned his enthusiasm for trivia into a side job by becoming a Quizmaster with King Trivia. He hosts pub-trivia events at restaurants and bars, combining his knowledge of trivia with his experience in public speaking, community engagement and entertainment.

Outside work and trivia, Barilone is an enthusiastic soccer player. He participates in adult recreational soccer and received his club’s 2024 Player of the Year award, recognizing sportsmanship, camaraderie and a positive attitude.

He is also a devoted dog owner, frequently mentioning his West Highland White Terrier, and is an enthusiastic pizza fan. In 2024, he won a promotional contest from a local pizza restaurant after creating a video featuring his dog, earning a year’s worth of pizza gift cards.
