Kara Peruccio is a University of Maine professor who is set to appear on Jeopardy! in May 2025, joining the ranks of Mainers who have participated on the beloved trivia show. Her journey to the stage has been a long one, with several attempts to get on the show, including auditions in 2011, 2020, and 2024. Finally, after a successful audition in September 2024, Kara received the call to appear on the show. She is an assistant professor in both the Department of History and the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program at the University of Maine. Her research focuses on the intersection of emotions, authoritarianism, and gender politics in the Mediterranean during the early 20th century, with a particular focus on women’s literature in Italy and Turkey. Her dissertation, titled Women on the Verge: Emotions, Authoritarianism, and the Novel in Italy and Turkey, 1922-1936, explores the relationship between women’s novels and authoritarian regimes. Kara is also working on a book about Mediterranean suffrage movements and their interactions with authoritarian governments and international suffrage organizations during the interwar period.
In addition to her academic work, Kara has participated in various professional engagements, including presenting at conferences and speaking at universities. She has also contributed articles to respected journals such as Journal of Women’s History and California Italian Studies. Kara’s academic contributions have made her a respected figure in her field, particularly in the study of modern Middle Eastern history and Mediterranean gender studies.
