Katy Doll is an instructor of American Studies at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM), having joined the institution in August 2024. She holds a Ph.D. in U.S. History from Indiana University Bloomington, where her research focused on the intersection of war, society, and communications. She also earned an M.A. in U.S. History from the same university and a B.A. in Journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Before her current position, Dr. Doll was an assistant professor of History at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. There, she taught a variety of courses related to U.S. history, global history, national security affairs, and politics and culture, covering both undergraduate and master’s level students. Her expertise includes teaching research methods and examining the Vietnam War, U.S. Foreign Relations, and propaganda in the modern era. She is particularly interested in the history of psychological warfare, especially the psychological strategies employed by the U.S. government during the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
In addition to her academic work, Dr. Doll has contributed to several areas of historical scholarship. She managed the Journal of American History blog and assisted with editorial tasks at Pelican Publishing and Atlantic Publishing Group. Her academic pursuits are complemented by her role as a volunteer, including time spent at The National WWII Museum in New Orleans, Louisiana, where she assisted with visitor services and served on the Volunteer Advisory Committee.
Outside the classroom, Dr. Doll enjoys outdoor activities with her dog, completing jigsaw puzzles, and baking. She is currently in the process of finishing her book titled High School Students Unite!: Sixties Radicalism, Education Reform, and FBI Surveillance on Teenagers, which is set to be published by the University of North Carolina Press. This title is based on twelve years of data and 75 interviews, further expanding her research into the cultural and political climate of the 1960s.
