Before joining the University of Washington Bothell, Michael worked at James Madison University as a Psychology Liaison Librarian and Associate Professor from January 2011 to July 2017. In addition to his academic work, Mungin is particularly involved in the creation of resources that address the intersectional experiences of queer and trans people of color (QTPOC). This project was funded by the 2018 Carnegie-Whitney Grant and has been well-received for its unique focus and contributions to QTPOC representation.

Mungin holds a Master of Library & Information Science (MLIS) from the University of Washington (2008-2010) and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the same institution (2002-2006). His professional interests extend beyond library services to include virtual reference assessment, equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) accountability in libraries, and media librarianship.

In his personal life, Mungin has a strong passion for cinema, particularly films that highlight marginalized experiences. He also enjoys playing and watching tennis and has recently returned to Seattle after seven years away. His ongoing engagement with local communities, both through his professional work and personal interests, underscores his commitment to education, advocacy, and the advancement of library services.
