About Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, 28 May 2024

Brenda Lee’s holiday classic “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” achieved a historic milestone by reaching the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week, more than six decades after its initial release in 1958. This achievement not only toppled Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” from its perennial reign but also set records, with Lee becoming the oldest solo artist to ever lead the chart at 78 years old. The song accumulated impressive figures with 34.9 million streams and 20.9 million in radio airplay impressions, also topping Billboard’s Streaming Songs chart. This surge marked the song as the oldest ever to reach number one, surpassing Carey’s previous record when her holiday hit first topped the chart 25 years after its release.

The success of “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” was celebrated by Lee in an emotional moment during a video interview for Billboard, where she was informed of the song’s ascent to the top of the charts. Visibly moved, Lee expressed her gratitude not only for the achievement but also for the teamwork and effort from her label and supporters that made it possible. Highlighting the collective endeavor, she emphasized the role of her supporters in rejuvenating the track’s popularity through modern channels. Meanwhile, the holiday season has witnessed a flurry of promotional efforts from both Lee and Carey, with Lee joining TikTok and releasing a new music video to celebrate the song’s 65th anniversary, and Carey engaging her fanbase with a festive tour and social media interactions that keep her in the holiday spotlight.

Final Jeopardy is the final round of the popular American television game show Jeopardy!, in which participants test their knowledge in numerous areas by answering questions. In Final Jeopardy, participants are given a single clue and must wager a percentage of their existing earnings based on their confidence in their ability to successfully respond.

Each contestant surreptitiously writes down their wager during the commercial break. The Final Jeopardy clue is presented when the programme resumes, and participants have 30 seconds to write down their solution in the form of a question (e.g., “What is…?”). When the timer runs out, the host, reveals each contestant’s response and wager in ascending order of their pre-Final Jeopardy scores. The scores of contestants are adjusted based on whether their response is correct or incorrect, as well as the amount wagered. At the end of the round, the contestant with the highest score is proclaimed the winner.
