Rachael Gray Jeopardy Contestant Profile
Rachael Gray is a PhD candidate in the Department of Earth Sciences at Kent State University, specializing in geoscience, with a focus on polar research. Her research investigates how changes to ice sheets impact sediment delivery and ocean biogeochemical cycles. She became passionate about polar regions during her time at The Ohio State University, where she completed her B.S. and M.S. theses under Dr. Leonid Polyak. Her M.S. research focused on reconstructing Arctic seawater circulation using neodymium isotopes, and her current PhD work continues this exploration, specifically in Arctic marine geochemistry and paleoceanography under Dr. Allyson Tessin.
Rachael’s scientific journey has also taken her to sea, where she joined a geophysical research cruise to the Chukchi Sea as a master’s student, and later became a lab technician on the research drillship JOIDES Resolution as part of the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP). She accumulated over 2.5 years at sea, participating in eleven IODP expeditions, supporting geochemistry and core description labs, and learning a variety of analytical techniques. As a PhD student, she has furthered her seagoing experience with IODP Expedition 400 to Baffin Bay and additional sediment sampling cruises to the Gulf of Alaska and Lake Erie.
In addition to her research, Rachael has a passion for science education. She completed the Master of Arts in Teaching program at the American Museum of Natural History in 2019, where she taught Earth science and physics in high-needs schools in the Bronx and Brooklyn. She then worked as a full-time middle school science teacher in upstate New York. Rachael has continued her teaching role as a graduate teaching assistant and is dedicated to improving science education, particularly in creating engaging online Earth science courses for college-level students.
Outside of science, Rachael enjoys hiking, camping, and traveling. She has had the opportunity to explore many places around the world due to her research. Rachael is also an avid musician, playing guitar, ukulele, and mandolin, and she enjoys participating in trivia contests.
