ANSWER:The Storm on the Sea of Galilee
About Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, 23 May 2024
“The Storm on the Sea of Galilee” stands out in Rembrandt’s extensive body of work not only as his sole seascape but also for its masterful depiction of human emotion and natural tumult. Completed in 1633, the painting captures a critical moment from the New Testament, where Jesus and his disciples are caught in a sudden, violent storm while crossing the Sea of Galilee. The scene is a powerful narrative moment: Jesus is depicted calmly arising from sleep at the stern of the boat, responding to his disciples’ panic with a profound question about their faith. This interplay between divine calmness and human despair is rendered with dramatic lighting and expressive facial features, showcasing Rembrandt’s exceptional ability to convey complex psychological states through art.
The composition of the painting is equally compelling, with the boat diagonally positioned across the canvas, tilting amidst the high waves, giving viewers a sense of the boat’s precariousness in the choppy water. The disciples are shown in various poses of fear and awe, some managing the sails, others approaching Jesus, and a few seemingly paralyzed by fear. This dynamic arrangement not only guides the viewer’s eye across the painting but also enhances the narrative’s emotional intensity, making the miraculous moment of the storm’s cessation more striking. The dramatic contrast of light and shadow, a hallmark of Rembrandt’s style, highlights the central figures and underscores the thematic contrasts of doubt and faith, fear and reassurance.
Unfortunately, the original painting was stolen in 1990 from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, in what is considered one of the most infamous art thefts in history. Its absence from public view has only heightened interest in its artistic and cultural significance. The theft of such a masterpiece is a poignant loss for the art community and the public, as it deprives scholars and admirers of the chance to experience its visual and emotional impact firsthand. Despite this, “The Storm on the Sea of Galilee” continues to be celebrated in reproductions and remembered as a seminal work in Rembrandt’s oeuvre, embodying his profound insights into human nature and his mastery of the painter’s craft.

Final Jeopardy is the final round of the popular American television game show Jeopardy!, in which participants test their knowledge in numerous areas by answering questions. In Final Jeopardy, participants are given a single clue and must wager a percentage of their existing earnings based on their confidence in their ability to successfully respond.
Each contestant surreptitiously writes down their wager during the commercial break. The Final Jeopardy clue is presented when the programme resumes, and participants have 30 seconds to write down their solution in the form of a question (e.g., “What is…?”). When the timer runs out, the host, reveals each contestant’s response and wager in ascending order of their pre-Final Jeopardy scores. The scores of contestants are adjusted based on whether their response is correct or incorrect, as well as the amount wagered. At the end of the round, the contestant with the highest score is proclaimed the winner.
