James Revell Carr is an Associate Professor of Ethnomusicology and Musicology at the University of Kentucky. He also holds the position of Director at the John Jacob Niles Center for American Music. His academic focus and research explore the impacts of travel and commerce on the development of hybrid music and dance cultures. Carr’s interests are diverse, including sea chanteys, Anglo-American balladry, Hawaiian music, folk music revivals, and improvisational rock.

Dr. Carr’s scholarly contributions are significant. His book, Hawaiian Music in Motion: Mariners, Missionaries, and Minstrels, was co-awarded the Society of Ethnomusicology’s Alan P. Merriam Prize in 2015, acknowledging it as an outstanding ethnomusicology publication. He has written extensively, with articles in prominent journals and reviews in academic publications like The Journal of American Folklore and The American Historical Review. Additionally, Carr has penned essays on The Grateful Dead and their community, laying the groundwork for his forthcoming book.

Prior to his tenure at the University of Kentucky, Carr served as an Associate Professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where he established the UNCG Old Time Ensemble. His diverse experience also includes roles as an Interpretive Specialist Park Ranger at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park and as an educator at Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut. He also curated significant exhibits at the Columbia River Maritime Museum in Oregon and was involved in the English Broadside Ballad Archive project, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Dr. Carr has actively participated in and contributed to the academic community. He served as the president of the Southeastern and Caribbean Chapter of the Society for Ethnomusicology from 2010 to 2011 and is currently the chair of the Historical Ethnomusicology Section of the same society. He regularly presents his research at national and international symposia, including the Society for American Music and the International Council for Traditional Music conferences.
