Ron Lalonde is a highly accomplished medical physicist based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He serves as the Chief Physicist at UPMC Shadyside Hospital and a Clinical Associate Professor in the University of Pittsburgh Department of Radiation Oncology. He also holds a role as a Medical Physicist at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and has long been involved in research, teaching, and oversight of radiation oncology physics across the UPMC network. His responsibilities include managing radiation oncology physics operations, supervising education and residency programs, and contributing to multiple committees including the regional coordinators committee and the UPMC Medical Physics Residency Program committee.

His clinical and research interests include radiosurgery planning and QA, IMRT planning, IGRT, and advanced knowledge-based planning systems. He has been a principal investigator on notable research initiatives, including a private Varian Medical Systems grant supporting his work evaluating RapidPlan margins and plan quality. His professional background spans clinical, industrial, and academic environments, and he has contributed to the development of major radiation therapy technologies such as IMRT, IGRT, and robotic radiosurgery. Earlier in his career, he helped develop the first commercial IMRT system (Corvus) and one of the first IGRT systems (BAT) during his time with NOMOS Corporation.

Ron’s academic path includes a PhD in Medical Biophysics from the University of Toronto under Drs. John Hunt and Stuart Foster. He previously earned both a BSc and MSc in Physics and Biophysics from the University of Waterloo, completing theses involving fluorescent spectroscopy and acoustic lens applications for ultrasound hyperthermia. Additional early career experiences included work in nuclear engineering, medical proton cyclotron development, medical physics, and radon detection.

He has worked at UPMC since 2000, where he is also a faculty member who teaches radiation therapy residents and routinely collaborates on research. His earlier roles include serving as Senior Medical Physicist at Western Pennsylvania Hospital and Hamilton Regional Cancer Center. Beyond UPMC, Ron has served as Chief Scientific Officer for D3 Oncology Solutions, offering consulting expertise in advanced radiation therapy technologies across the United States, Canada, and Europe.

Ron is also known publicly for being the identical twin brother of Jeopardy! champion Ray Lalonde. The twins, originally from Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, grew up watching Jeopardy! with their parents. Ron became a contestant on the show after Ray’s thirteen-game winning streak in December twenty twenty-two. His appearance, filmed with his family in attendance, involved some humorous moments where host Ken Jennings accidentally referred to him as Ray. Ron prepared extensively, even purchasing a practice buzzer after receiving advice from his brother about timing, nerves, and enjoying the experience. Despite significant stage nerves, he embraced the opportunity and took pride in carrying on the family’s Jeopardy! legacy.
