ANSWER: Rigoletto

About Today’s Final Jeopardy – Wednesday, 8 May 2024

“Rigoletto” is set in the corrupt court of the Duke of Mantua, where the licentious Duke lusts after every woman he encounters. Rigoletto, the hunchbacked court jester, aids his master in his seductions and mocks the husbands and fathers of the victims, earning the enmity of the courtiers. The plot thickens when Rigoletto’s own beloved daughter, Gilda, falls victim to the Duke’s charms, having been seduced by him under the guise of a poor student. Unaware of her relationship with Rigoletto, the courtiers abduct Gilda and deliver her to the Duke. Rigoletto is devastated when he discovers the truth, and the opera delves into his dual struggles with his role as a father and his thirst for vengeance. His plans for revenge lead to tragic consequences, highlighting the themes of fate and retribution that drive the dramatic narrative.

Francesco Maria Piave’s libretto for “Rigoletto” skillfully adapts Victor Hugo’s play “Le roi s’amuse,” despite significant changes required by the censors. The original play’s depiction of a licentious king was deemed too sensitive, prompting Verdi and Piave to shift the setting and alter characters to suit the political and social climate of their time. This adaptation was not merely a concession but a transformation that allowed “Rigoletto” to explore universal themes of power, corruption, and innocence lost, making it relatable and poignant. Verdi’s score, known for its emotional depth and musical innovation, complements Piave’s narrative, bringing to life the complex emotions of the characters through iconic arias such as “La donna è mobile” and “Caro nome.” Together, Verdi and Piave created an opera that not only entertained but also provoked thought about the moral decisions of its characters, securing “Rigoletto” a permanent place in the opera canon.

Final Jeopardy is the final round of the popular American television game show Jeopardy!, in which participants test their knowledge in numerous areas by answering questions. In Final Jeopardy, participants are given a single clue and must wager a percentage of their existing earnings based on their confidence in their ability to successfully respond.

Each contestant surreptitiously writes down their wager during the commercial break. The Final Jeopardy clue is presented when the programme resumes, and participants have 30 seconds to write down their solution in the form of a question (e.g., “What is…?”). When the timer runs out, the host, reveals each contestant’s response and wager in ascending order of their pre-Final Jeopardy scores. The scores of contestants are adjusted based on whether their response is correct or incorrect, as well as the amount wagered. At the end of the round, the contestant with the highest score is proclaimed the winner.
