About Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, 4 December 2023

The Atlanta History Centre describes Margaret Mitchell’s novel “Gone with the Wind” as “both beloved and condemned almost from the moment of its publication” in 1936. This novel, set in the American South during the Civil War and Reconstruction period, soon became a best-seller and is now considered an important work in American literature. It has, however, been the source of debate.

“Gone with the Wind” received critical acclaim for its vivid storytelling and fascinating characters, particularly Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler. Its depiction of the challenges of the Civil War and the changes in the South after Reconstruction captivated readers. In 1937, the work was awarded the Pulitzer Prise for Fiction, and it was made into a tremendously successful film in 1939.

Despite its success, the work has received criticism for its depiction of slavery and African Americans, as well as its romanticised vision of the Old South. According to critics, it fosters negative racial stereotypes and glosses over the realities of slavery. The novel’s depiction of the Confederacy and its aftermath has sparked ongoing arguments regarding its role in American culture, particularly how the Civil War and its aftermath are remembered and depicted.

Final Jeopardy is the final round of the popular American television game show Jeopardy!, in which participants test their knowledge in numerous areas by answering questions. In Final Jeopardy, participants are given a single clue and must wager a percentage of their existing earnings based on their confidence in their ability to successfully respond.

Each contestant surreptitiously writes down their wager during the commercial break. The Final Jeopardy clue is presented when the programme resumes, and participants have 30 seconds to write down their solution in the form of a question (e.g., “What is…?”). When the timer runs out, the host, reveals each contestant’s response and wager in ascending order of their pre-Final Jeopardy scores. The scores of contestants are adjusted based on whether their response is correct or incorrect, as well as the amount wagered. At the end of the round, the contestant with the highest score is proclaimed the winner.
