About Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, 13 June 2024
Anthony Burgess’s novel “A Clockwork Orange” is widely recognized for its exploration of themes such as free will, the nature of evil, and the possibility of redemption. However, the American editions of the book notably omit the final chapter, where Alex, the protagonist, undergoes a significant transformation. Burgess has expressed his dissatisfaction with this omission, as he considered the final chapter essential to completing Alex’s narrative arc. In this 21st chapter, Alex’s development is portrayed not through a forced change, as seen with the controversial psychological conditioning earlier in the novel, but through a natural, self-initiated decision to change his ways. The absence of this chapter in American editions left readers with a bleaker, more unresolved ending, which suggested a cyclical nature to violence and youth delinquency without offering a pathway to personal growth and moral choice.
Burgess intended for “A Clockwork Orange” to end on a note of hope and human potential, with Alex choosing to abandon his violent past and contemplating a more conventional and peaceful future. This concluding chapter shows Alex envisioning himself as a husband and father, indicating his desire for a different life and highlighting the capacity for human beings to outgrow their destructive tendencies. By reflecting on his own youthful exuberance and aggression, Alex recognizes the emptiness of such a lifestyle and opts for a more fulfilling direction. Burgess’s frustration with the American edition stemmed from his belief that without this redemptive ending, the novel’s message was significantly altered, emphasizing an inherent and unchangeable human predilection for violence, rather than the possibility of change and the power of personal choice.

Final Jeopardy is the final round of the popular American television game show Jeopardy!, in which participants test their knowledge in numerous areas by answering questions. In Final Jeopardy, participants are given a single clue and must wager a percentage of their existing earnings based on their confidence in their ability to successfully respond.
Each contestant surreptitiously writes down their wager during the commercial break. The Final Jeopardy clue is presented when the programme resumes, and participants have 30 seconds to write down their solution in the form of a question (e.g., “What is…?”). When the timer runs out, the host, reveals each contestant’s response and wager in ascending order of their pre-Final Jeopardy scores. The scores of contestants are adjusted based on whether their response is correct or incorrect, as well as the amount wagered. At the end of the round, the contestant with the highest score is proclaimed the winner.
