CLUE: The most recent British Monarch not to succeed a parent or a sibling was this ruler who succeeded an uncle

ANSWER: Queen Victoria

About Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, 11 September 2023

Victoria was the latest British ruler to ascend the throne following an uncle, King William IV, instead of a parent or sibling. Born to Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, and Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, she lost her father when she was only eight months old. Consequently, she was designated as the heir presumptive to the British crown.

Taking the throne in 1837 after the passing of her uncle, she was his nearest legitimate heir because her father had died during her infancy and she had no surviving siblings to claim the throne. Her time as monarch stretched until her death in 1901, marking her as one of Britain’s longest-reigning rulers. This era, known as the Victorian Age, was transformative for the United Kingdom in several ways, including the zenith of the British Empire and groundbreaking advancements in both industry and culture.

In her personal life, Victoria had a deeply affectionate relationship with her spouse, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Together, they had a large family of nine children who later married into diverse European royal households. Following the untimely death of Prince Albert in 1861, Victoria spent the rest of her life in mourning and donned black attire as a symbol of her loss.

Final Jeopardy is the final round of the popular American television game show Jeopardy!, in which participants test their knowledge in numerous areas by answering questions. In Final Jeopardy, participants are given a single clue and must wager a percentage of their existing earnings based on their confidence in their ability to successfully respond.

Each contestant surreptitiously writes down their wager during the commercial break. The Final Jeopardy clue is presented when the programme resumes, and participants have 30 seconds to write down their solution in the form of a question (e.g., “What is…?”). When the timer runs out, the host, reveals each contestant’s response and wager in ascending order of their pre-Final Jeopardy scores. The scores of contestants are adjusted based on whether their response is correct or incorrect, as well as the amount wagered. At the end of the round, the contestant with the highest score is proclaimed the winner.
