About Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, 5 December 2023

In “Only Murders in the Building,” the real-world Belnord, a storied structure dating back to 1908 and situated at 86th Street and Broadway in New York City’s Upper West Side, serves as the inspiration for the show’s primary setting. The series unfolds in a make-believe apartment complex, where a string of murders forms the central plot, and the Belnord stands in as the architectural double for this fictional location.

The narrative takes place in the Arconia, a character in itself within the series, representing a grand and eccentric apartment building typical of New York City. The real Belnord, where the show’s external and some internal scenes are shot, mirrors this essence, showcasing the unique character and historical allure of the city.

Architecturally, the Belnord was designed by Hiss and Weekes and finished in 1908, notable for its Italian Renaissance design. Occupying a full city block, this landmark is distinguished by its spacious and ornate courtyard, a relatively uncommon feature in New York City apartments. The Belnord was a pioneer among the city’s large apartment complexes and gained landmark status in 1966, reflecting its architectural and historical significance.

Final Jeopardy is the final round of the popular American television game show Jeopardy!, in which participants test their knowledge in numerous areas by answering questions. In Final Jeopardy, participants are given a single clue and must wager a percentage of their existing earnings based on their confidence in their ability to successfully respond.

Each contestant surreptitiously writes down their wager during the commercial break. The Final Jeopardy clue is presented when the programme resumes, and participants have 30 seconds to write down their solution in the form of a question (e.g., “What is…?”). When the timer runs out, the host, reveals each contestant’s response and wager in ascending order of their pre-Final Jeopardy scores. The scores of contestants are adjusted based on whether their response is correct or incorrect, as well as the amount wagered. At the end of the round, the contestant with the highest score is proclaimed the winner.
