About Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, 21 November 2023
The HBO drama series “Succession,” created by Jesse Armstrong, finds its roots in an earlier screenplay by Armstrong titled “Murdoch.” Premiering in 2018, “Succession” has garnered critical acclaim for its portrayal of the Roy family, a deeply troubled group that controls a massive global media and entertainment conglomerate.
“Succession” delves into the intricate web of family relationships, power play, and corporate strategy within this fictional media empire. Although the series is a work of fiction, it was initially inspired by the real-life Murdoch family, who are well-known for their extensive media holdings.
Armstrong’s original screenplay, “Murdoch,” captured Hollywood’s attention and was even listed on the Black List, which highlights the most promising unproduced scripts in the film industry. However, this screenplay never transitioned into a film. Described in a 2011 Forbes article by Jeff Bercovici, the screenplay was set over a single day – the 78th birthday of an Australian-born media mogul. The plot revolved around the mogul using his birthday as a chance to gather his four oldest children and propose changes to the family trust.
Though “Murdoch” didn’t make it to the big screen, its themes and focus on a media dynasty are clearly reflected in Armstrong’s later creation, “Succession.” This series expands upon the ideas and themes explored in the unproduced screenplay, offering a deeper and more nuanced exploration of similar subject matter.

Final Jeopardy is the final round of the popular American television game show Jeopardy!, in which participants test their knowledge in numerous areas by answering questions. In Final Jeopardy, participants are given a single clue and must wager a percentage of their existing earnings based on their confidence in their ability to successfully respond.
Each contestant surreptitiously writes down their wager during the commercial break. The Final Jeopardy clue is presented when the programme resumes, and participants have 30 seconds to write down their solution in the form of a question (e.g., “What is…?”). When the timer runs out, the host, reveals each contestant’s response and wager in ascending order of their pre-Final Jeopardy scores. The scores of contestants are adjusted based on whether their response is correct or incorrect, as well as the amount wagered. At the end of the round, the contestant with the highest score is proclaimed the winner.
