CLUE: Thomas Hales proved hexagonal structures are the most compact way to fill a plane, a centuries-old theory based on the behavior of these

ANSWER: Bees

About Today’s Final Jeopardy – Wednesday, 6 December 2023

Thomas Hales offered a mathematical confirmation for the long-held belief that hexagonal structures are the most space-efficient and compact method for filling a plane. This theory, inspired by honeybees’ construction of their honeycombs, has been noted for centuries. The hexagonal cells that bees construct in their honeycombs have always appeared to be an optimal solution for conserving space and materials.

Referred to as the “honeycomb conjecture,” this principle suggests that hexagonal tiling is the most material-efficient way to create a network of cells within a certain space. Before Hales’ mathematical validation, this idea was generally accepted based on empirical observations of nature, particularly focusing on how bees build their honeycombs.

The significance of Hales’ achievement in mathematically proving this theory is profound. It validated a long-standing belief grounded in natural observation and laid a firm mathematical foundation under this geometric concept. Hales’ work serves as a prime example of how natural phenomena can not only inspire but also corroborate mathematical theories.

Final Jeopardy is the final round of the popular American television game show Jeopardy!, in which participants test their knowledge in numerous areas by answering questions. In Final Jeopardy, participants are given a single clue and must wager a percentage of their existing earnings based on their confidence in their ability to successfully respond.

Each contestant surreptitiously writes down their wager during the commercial break. The Final Jeopardy clue is presented when the programme resumes, and participants have 30 seconds to write down their solution in the form of a question (e.g., “What is…?”). When the timer runs out, the host, reveals each contestant’s response and wager in ascending order of their pre-Final Jeopardy scores. The scores of contestants are adjusted based on whether their response is correct or incorrect, as well as the amount wagered. At the end of the round, the contestant with the highest score is proclaimed the winner.
