CLUE: Trained as an engineer, Premier Li Peng championed this in 1992; it would ultimately displace over a million people

ANSWER: Three Gorges Dam

About Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, 25 May 2023

Li Peng was a strong advocate for the Three Gorges Dam project, giving it his approval in 1992. This enormous hydroelectric dam resulted in the relocation of over a million individuals due to the significant flooding caused by the reservoir.

The Three Gorges Dam, constructed on the Yangtze River in central China, is the largest power station globally in terms of installed capacity. The building process commenced in 1994, following Li Peng’s support two years prior, and was finalized by 2006. The entire facility became fully operational in 2012.

The primary roles of the dam include electricity generation, enhancement of the river’s freight capacity, and mitigation of potential downstream floods through its flood storage capability.

However, the project has been embroiled in controversy. The reservoir’s flooding displaced around 1.3 million people, leading to significant shifts in the social and economic landscapes. Historical sites were flooded, and the dam’s environmental impact on the local ecosystem raised concerns. An ongoing debate exists as to whether the flood control and power generation advantages outweigh the substantial social and environmental repercussions.

Final Jeopardy is the final round of the popular American television game show Jeopardy!, in which participants test their knowledge in numerous areas by answering questions. In Final Jeopardy, participants are given a single clue and must wager a percentage of their existing earnings based on their confidence in their ability to successfully respond.

Each contestant surreptitiously writes down their wager during the commercial break. The Final Jeopardy clue is presented when the programme resumes, and participants have 30 seconds to write down their solution in the form of a question (e.g., “What is…?”). When the timer runs out, the host, reveals each contestant’s response and wager in ascending order of their pre-Final Jeopardy scores. The scores of contestants are adjusted based on whether their response is correct or incorrect, as well as the amount wagered. At the end of the round, the contestant with the highest score is proclaimed the winner.
