CLUE: Until 1991 this country, named for a river, had a capital whose name means “lakes” in Portuguese

ANSWER: Nigeria

About Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, 11 July 2024

Until 1991, Nigeria’s capital was Lagos, a name derived from the Portuguese word for “lakes,” reflecting the geographic features noticed by Portuguese explorers in the 15th century. Situated on the Gulf of Guinea, Lagos is surrounded by a series of lagoons, rivers, and islands, which initially provided strategic advantages for maritime navigation and commerce. Over the centuries, Lagos evolved from a modest Yoruba fishing village into a major port city and eventually the capital of Nigeria when the nation gained independence from Britain in 1960. As the capital, Lagos became the administrative and economic hub of Nigeria, attracting multitudes from across the nation. This influx led to rapid urbanization and population growth, making Lagos one of the most populous and dynamic cities in Africa.

However, by the late 20th century, Lagos was facing significant challenges including overcrowding, traffic congestion, and infrastructural strains, which were exacerbated by its coastal location and limited geographic expansibility. In response to these issues and in an effort to distribute developmental prospects more evenly across the country, the Nigerian government decided to move the capital to Abuja. Officially becoming the capital in 1991, Abuja was chosen for its more central location within Nigeria, which was deemed beneficial for political and administrative neutrality. The development of Abuja was part of a planned approach aimed at creating a purpose-built city that could handle the demands of a modern capital, thereby alleviating the pressures on Lagos. This move was also seen as a way to foster greater unity among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic populations by situating the capital in a less ethnically dominated area than Lagos.

Final Jeopardy is the final round of the popular American television game show Jeopardy!, in which participants test their knowledge in numerous areas by answering questions. In Final Jeopardy, participants are given a single clue and must wager a percentage of their existing earnings based on their confidence in their ability to successfully respond.

Each contestant surreptitiously writes down their wager during the commercial break. The Final Jeopardy clue is presented when the programme resumes, and participants have 30 seconds to write down their solution in the form of a question (e.g., “What is…?”). When the timer runs out, the host, reveals each contestant’s response and wager in ascending order of their pre-Final Jeopardy scores. The scores of contestants are adjusted based on whether their response is correct or incorrect, as well as the amount wagered. At the end of the round, the contestant with the highest score is proclaimed the winner.
